About the position
EXPECTATION Washington College has a tradition of excellent undergraduate teaching. This appointment is for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor in microbiology. A typical course load consists of two lectures and two labs each semester during the academic year (3/3 load). Teaching values in the department include a commitment to rigorous and inclusive, experiential education, development of innovative courses and the potential for engaging students both within and outside the classroom, including mentoring senior thesis students and contributing to departmental service, where appropriate. Individual laboratory space will be provided along with access to shared cell, tissue culture, and microscopy suites. Candidates will also have access to a rooftop greenhouse, aquaculture facility, research vessel on the Chester River, and the River and Field Campus, a 4,700-acre mixed-habitat field station. The Department of Biology will seek to convert this position to a tenure-track hire beginning in August 2025. Applications are currently under review. Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS Qualified candidates must have a Ph.D. in Biology or closely related discipline. The candidate will be expected to instruct microbiology, new or existing advanced biology courses in the candidate’s area of expertise, a biology course for the general education curriculum, and other introductory courses as necessary. Ability to instruct microbiology (and the associated lab) is required, otherwise a candidate’s area of expertise is flexible with preference given to applicants that diversify the range of expertise offered by existing faculty in the Department of Biology.
