The Translational Physiology Section within the Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Obesity Branch (DEOB) is recruiting a Staff Scientist to work under the supervision of Dr. Aaron Cypess, MD, PhD. Candidates should have proven experience in mammalian cell culture and translational laboratory methods.
About the position
The Staff Scientist will manage a laboratory-based research platform that focuses on the study of human adipose tissue and cellular physiology but can expand to animal models.
Duties required for this position as Staff Scientist are as follows:
- Technical
- Design and conduct experiments relevant to the study of the cellular physiology of human brown and white adipocytes. These include, but are not limited to cell culture, qPCR, immunoblotting, assays of lipolysis, and bioenergetics via Seahorse. The incumbent will introduce new methodologies as needed based on the literature and discussions.
- Coordinate and ideally lead bioinformatics studies related to RNA-seq and different omics platforms.
- Using surgical- and autopsy-derived human and mammalian tissues, perform molecular biology, tissue staining, and metabolic studies.
- Stay informed about new approaches and technologies, including participation in conferences, workshops, and/or formal classroom instruction.
- Independently locate and utilize scientific resources.
- Lead the data collection, data analysis, and manuscript preparation. Management
- Manage the laboratory operations and maintain compliance with all regulations. Perform and manage laboratory, branch, or IRP duties (including IC Committees) that draw upon scientific or science-related technical expertise in an administrative or managerial role.
- Interface with companies to maintain equipment.
- Initiate and/or support collaborative projects, including the associated paperwork, with local and distant colleagues and collaborators in both academic and industry.
- Coordinate initiatives that support the mission of a lab or branch such as training and education, resource management (ordering, keeping track of inventory, managing mouse colonies, etc.) or other managerial activities requiring scientific expertise.
- Academic
- Stay current with scientific literature.
- Train new members of the lab or other key procedures of the laboratory, and in lab operations and compliance.
- Assist intramural staff, including students, technicians, and postdoctoral fellows, with experiments.
- Present results of their investigations at local, national, and international forums; contribute to the writing of competitive funding applications; and publish manuscripts relevant to the findings.

Qualifications
- A PhD in the fields of biological sciences.
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience as a post-doctoral fellow leading and publishing independent research projects.
- English language proficiency.
