OFFICE OF VACCINES RESEARCH AND REVIEW (OVRR) CENTER FOR BIOLOGICS EVALUATION AND RESEARCH (CBER) FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION (FDA) DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES (HHS) The FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER), Office of Vaccines Research and Review (OVRR), Division of Bacterial, Parasitic and Allergenic Products (DBPAP) is recruiting to fill a Staff Fellow/Visiting Associate position in the Laboratory of Mucosal Pathogens and Cellular Immunology (LMPCI).

About the position

RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will perform the following major duties: • The research project will examine bacteriophage-host interactions between Staphylococcus aureus MRSA isolates and bacteriophages as they relate to bacteriophage therapy. Areas of focus include mechanisms of bacterial resistance to bacteriophages and the use of animal models and in vitro models for phage therapy. • Participate in the regulatory review of bacteriophage therapy applications submitted to the FDA.

SALARY: Salary is commensurate with education and experience and includes an excellent benefits package. Qualifications

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be required to meet the specific qualification requirements of the applicable occupational series below. Microbiology Series (RG- 0403) Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent. ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree (M.D., D.V.M., or Sc.D., etc.) in a field related to biological science is required. Candidates must also have strong collaborative skills, and excellent written and oral communication skills. PREFERRED SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: The candidate should have microbiological laboratory expertise and be familiar with standard molecular biology techniques. Expertise in bacterial and phage propagation, manipulation, and genetics is highly desirable. The use of NGS for analysis of bacterial and phage genomes and transcriptomes is highly desirable. The candidate should also have a record of publishing original research in peer-reviewed scientific journals. FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
