The Department of Biology at Gettysburg College seeks an adjunct instructor for one semester in the spring of 2025. The position consists of teaching one or more lab sections of the first-year introductory course for majors in the Biological Sciences.
About the position
Teaching responsibilities: Lab sections of 16 students are taught Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday from 1 – 3:50 pm and from 6:45 – 9:35 pm. An undergraduate teaching assistant who has taken the course previously will be available to help during each lab. Additional expectations: Attendance at weekly lab meeting, time TBD based on schedules. Help keep lab tidy, including set-up and clean-up of lab. Prep work (pouring plates, washing dishes, etc.) is done by a team of students and is not the responsibility of the lab instructor. Important skills: A familiarity with the structure and preparation of lab reports in the sciences; familiarity with the scientific method and basic experimental design; basic statistics skills, including t-tests; ability to identify major organ systems in vertebrate dissections; understanding of basic vascular physiology in flowering plants; ability to use data acquisition software and hardware in conjunction with sensors (e.g., conductivity, CO2, O2, and temperature probes) during laboratory exercises. A love of teaching and excitement about undergraduate education is critical. Lab course overview: The students are typically in their first year of college, and consist of Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Health Science, Environmental Studies, and Psychology majors. Generally they are highly motivated and curious about science! Lab exercises focus around plant and animal anatomy and physiology and energetic metabolism. Students write up their experiments in the form of laboratory reports and prepare oral presentations.

A PhD or MS in Biology or a related field and a commitment to teaching in the liberal arts tradition are required. Candidates who are close to receiving their PhD will also be considered.
