NIH funding opportunities for Fellows in the NIH IRP

A resource for NIH Intramural trainees to find potential sources of research funding from the NIH.

Please note that this page is specifically written for NIH intramural trainees (doing research on NIH intramural campuses). If you are an extramural postdoc please see grants.nih.gov to explore NIH fellowships that may be right for you.

K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award

This fellowship is intended to provide support both at the postdoc level (K99) and also for the transition to a first faculty position (R00).

U.S. citizens and non-U.S. citizens are eligible. K99 applicants must have no more than 4 years of postdoctoral research experience at the time of the initial or the subsequent resubmission or revision application, and must be in mentored, postdoctoral training positions to be eligible to apply to the K99/R00 program.

Grants can be funded up to 5 years of support consisting of two phases. There are usually three application deadlines per year. For more information and eligibility: K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award

K22 Career Transition Award

This award provides support to basic or clinical investigators to develop their independent research skills through a two phase program; an initial training period and a final period at an extramural institution.

U.S. citizens and Permanent Residents are eligible. There are different requirements for the K22 program based on the institute that you are applying to. Please read the information carefully: K22 Career Transition Award

Postdoctoral Research Associate Training (PRAT) Program

This program prepares trainees for leadership positions in biomedical careers through mentored laboratory research, networking, and intensive career and leadership development activities. PRAT fellows receive three years of stipend support (at competitive levels commensurate with experience and recognition of program selection), benefits and a travel allowance, and will participate in PRAT Program activities.
